Who We Are
Land Beyond the Sea (LBS) is an Ecological Design firm based in Ithaca, in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of New York State. We apply core tenets of Ecological Design, focusing on design for the mutual benefit of humans & the natural world; We envision humans as active participants in healing the web of life; We apply the self-designing capacity of ecosystems & their complex interwoven relationships; In gratitude, we involve the shared wisdom of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) of regional Indigenous communities; We embrace integrated, adaptive, & collaborative management approaches; We strive to design closed-loop systems & eliminate the concept of waste; We focus on a localized, community-scale approach, inspiring awareness, stewardship, & action!
Miguel Berrios is a Principal and Lead Landscape Designer with LBS Ecological Design. Miguel is an active community member, volunteering as a board member of Friends of Stewart Park. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources Management from Cornell University and a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from SUNY-ESF. Miguel is a LEED (USGBC) accredited professional and an ISA Certified Arborist.
Sarah Kelsen is a Principal & Ecological Engineer, specializing in regenerative ecology & re-connecting people to place. Sarah has a passion for outdoor, experiential education, and has been inspired by the teachings of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and a lifetime of relationship building with the wild. Entertaining her joy for wild foraging, Sarah has recently lead plant walks & hands-on workshops for clients such as Columbia, Wanderlust, VDKA 6100, & Dewar’s Whisky. Sarah is happiest when she is outside in the woods, facilitating connection with the Earth, and when she’s contributing to the greater good. As a passionate locavore & forager, she sees the possibility of food forests everywhere.
